Peoria police warn against Craigslist cellphone scam

Press release:

The Peoria Police Department has received numerous complaints regarding a Craigslist scam and the sale of cellular phones.

In an attempt to prevent additional victims, the Peoria Police Department would like to make the public aware of the scam. The scam is very basic and targets sellers with Craigslist ads selling cellular phones. The buyer contacts the seller and arranges to meet in a neutral location such as a business parking lot to meet and complete the transaction. The buyer then gives the seller counterfeit currency in exchange for the property (in these cases, cell phones).

Unfortunately, the seller does not immediately realize the counterfeit nature of the funds.

As a reminder to the public, in effort to deter scams involving on-line commerce, the Peoria Police Department visitor parking lot (Walnut St on the side of the Police Department) as well as the lobby is available for the use of the public in providing neutral grounds and safer transaction locations.

Citizens are reminded all transactions remain civil and neither Commissioned Personnel nor Non-Commissioned Personnel shall intervene on either party’s behalf. The purpose of using the Police Department as a transaction location is to provide a safe environment for the exchange of goods.

The Peoria Police Department is located at 600 SW Adams. The lobby can be used during the hours of 6 a.m.– 10 p.m.
