It’s not hard to spot a troll

Except for, perhaps, Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis, I am probably the most trolled man in Peoria (The Peoria ANTI Pundit? Please).

So it was with special interest I heard Lindy West describe the story of her and her troll today on public radio. An early version of it is here. Basically, she wrote of being trolled by a guy, and the guy actually contacted her to apologize. It was a moving piece and I approve.

My advice is this: If you have skin that is just too thin, stay off the Internet. You will be much, much happier. Myself, I am used to it. I developed the “thanks for the input” to respond to trollish comments, but If they get too bad, I will perform a summary banning and delinking. Enough is enough. It’s not censorship, because anyone is free to use their own personal treasure to put up their own Web page.

What is trolling. The glib answer is “I know it when I see it.” A better answer is that when you are commenting that someone deserves to be raped, or is just too ugly to rape even though she deserves to be raped, then, sport, you crossed the line. No one should have to put up with that.

Recently, someone wrote of my work on Peoria.com. “I read through most of this site and high school papers do a better job.” Not a troll, although not for lack of trying. I approve.

  1. To be fair, Peoria.com doesn’t really do much more than post sensationalized accounts from the police blotter (which is public record down at the police station), and press releases from the city. There’s really not anything being done there that could be called “reporting,” for all the bashing the Peoria Pundit blog does of the ever-shrinking Journal Star.

Man, all those Palin fans must be really embarrassed
